At StorieBrook, we believe therapy should be accessible — and we also believe clinicians deserve to be paid well for their time, training, and expertise. Our Sliding Scale model is one way we balance these commitments.
Each clinician maintains a limited number of sliding scale spots within their caseload. These sessions are offered at a reduced rate based on what feels sustainable for you, determined collaboratively. We do not require proof of income. Instead, we invite an honest conversation about what allows you to engage in therapy consistently.
Some sliding scale rates represent a small financial loss for the practice. These spots are possible because of clients who pay the full fee. In this way, our community supports itself — those with more financial flexibility help create room for those with less.
There isn’t one formula — but here are some helpful ways to think about it:
Consider your monthly income after taxes.
Look at your essential expenses (housing, food, transportation, healthcare, debt).
Ask yourself: after essentials, do I have discretionary income for things like dining out, subscriptions, travel, hobbies, or savings?
Think about frequency — weekly therapy at one rate is a different commitment than monthly sessions at the same rate.
Consider how marginalized identities may impact financial access or stability, even if your income number alone looks higher.
You might also reflect using the “green bottle” framework:
Are your basic needs consistently met?
Do you have access to savings or financial support if something unexpected happens?
Or are you regularly choosing between necessary expenses?
Sliding scale spots are limited, but because all clinicians hold some, they are generally more available than our Low Cost Therapy Program.
At StorieBrook, we believe that the cost of care should never stand between you and healing. We use the Green Bottle Sliding Scale Method, originally developed by Alexis J. Cunningfolk, as a tool of economic justice and community care.
Rather than asking you to prove your income or justify your finances, we trust you to know your own situation. Look at the bottles above and identify which one honestly reflects your current financial reality. Then choose a fee within the following ranges that feels manageable for you.
Full Bottle = Full Rates - $250-350/session
Bottle Half Full = $ 150-250/session
Bottle Mostly Empty = $100-150/session
If you need a lower rate, you can look at the information for our Low Cost Therapy Services on that page also.
We do not verify financial information. This system thrives on trust — and we extend that trust to you fully. If your financial situation changes, we ask that you let us know so that limited sliding fee spots remain available to those who need them most.
Please be aware that each therapist has a limited number of sliding fee scale slots available. If your preferred range isn't currently available, we will do our best to connect you with other resources or let you know when a slot opens up.
Questions about fees? We're always happy to talk it through — just contact us.
StorieBrook operates as a mission-driven business. While we are not legally structured as a nonprofit, we function similarly in spirit:
Clinicians are paid fairly for their work.
There are no excess profits distributed to owners or boards.
Remaining funds are reinvested into training, supervision, and expanded access.
Full-fee sessions support sliding scale access.
Sliding scale supports broader affordability.
The Low Cost Program extends care to those with the fewest resources.
