StorieBrook does NOT provide 24/7 on-call services. For help now, contact one of the Resources for Psychological Emergencies here ->
StorieBrook operates as a mission-driven practice. Clinicians are paid fairly, and remaining funds are reinvested into training, supervision, and expanding access — not distributed as excess profit. Full-fee sessions support sliding scale access, and sliding scale helps sustain our low cost program. Together, this creates a community model of care built on shared responsibility and long-term sustainability.
Our sliding scale is a collaborative, client-led model that adjusts fees based on what feels sustainable for you. Every clinician holds a limited number of reduced-fee spots, made possible by clients who pay full fee. Some sliding scale sessions represent a small loss to the practice, but this model allows us to expand access while maintaining stability. If you have some financial flexibility but need adjustment, this is likely the right fit.
Our Low Cost Therapy Program is designed for those with the fewest financial resources. These sessions are provided by graduate trainees under licensed supervision and are made possible through donated supervision time, training, and organizational resources. There is no outside funding for this program, so availability is limited and may include a waitlist. This option is intended for those who would otherwise not be able to access therapy at all.
StorieBrook is a mission-driven practice. We believe clinicians deserve fair compensation, and we also believe access matters. Our fee structure supports:
Fair wages for clinicians
Sliding scale availability
Our low cost therapy program
Ongoing training and supervision
Sustainable operations
Our goal is long-term stability so we can continue serving the community.
Our standard fee is $250–$300 per 45–55 minute clinical hour, depending on clinician and service type.
In addition to therapy sessions, professional time may be billed for:
Phone calls longer than 15 minutes
Clinical documentation, reports, or letters
Consultation with other providers (with your permission)
Legal involvement (billed at full standard rate)
Sessions are typically charged at the time they occur.
If you are experiencing financial difficulty, please speak with your clinician. We offer sliding scale options and a low cost therapy program (see these pages for details).
We securely process payments using Stripe via Therapy Brands Pay at the time of service (unless you have made other arrangements with us).
We accept major credit cards, debit cards, and FSA/HSA cards.
A card is kept on file in our secure system (we do not have access to your card information).
Charges may appear on your statement as TheraNest and/or StorieBrook Therapy & Consulting.
Receipt notifications may be automatically sent by your credit card company — it is your responsibility to manage those settings if confidentiality is a concern.
Invoices are available through our secure client portal. We are happy to rovide detailed reciepts should you need these for your accounting or to petition for insurance reimbursement.
Some of our clinicians are credentialed with insurance plans and bill through Headway, a secure third-party billing platform (for details on who accepts what plans, see the clinician detail pages).
If you plan to use insurance:
Your Protected Health Information (PHI) will be securely transmitted to Headway for claims processing.
Headway has signed a HIPAA Business Associate Agreement (BAA), ensuring compliance with federal privacy standards.
You may receive correspondence directly from Headway and/or your insurance provider regarding claims, Explanation of Benefits (EOBs), or cost-sharing.
You are responsible for understanding your deductible, co-pay, and co-insurance.
Insurance companies require a mental health diagnosis and documentation of medical necessity.
Insurance does not reimburse for missed appointments.
Insurance correspondence may be mailed or emailed to the policy holder.
If you prefer not to use insurance for privacy or other reasons, you may choose to self-pay. All of our providers can provide a receipt (often referred to as a "superbill") for private pay services. These receipts contain all the details you need to request reimbursement for OUT-of-NETWORK costs directly from your insurance provider if desired.
If you are engaging with us for services for which we cannot bill insurance, or with a provider who cannot bill your insurance, this is the best way to work with your insurance company to get this covered.
Because of our small size and billing arrangements with Headway, StorieBrook CANNOT bill insurance for:
Assessments (including pre-surgical, gender affirming care, neurotype, or any other time limited services
Support groups (or any other non-therapy services)
Relationship therapy or counseling
Please remember that our clinicians are contractors, and we run as a mission driven (functionally non-profit) business. We do not have excess funds available , therefore our clinicians (all contractors) do not get paid for missed or late cancelled appointments. For that reason:
We require 24 hours’ notice to cancel or reschedule an appointment.
Late cancellations and missed sessions are billed at $50, including emergencies.
Also note that insurance does not reimburse for missed sessions. If you bill your sessions to insurance, you will be charged the missed session fee directly.
Clients are responsible for keeping accounts current.
If a balance remains unpaid for more than 60 days and no arrangements have been made, we may pursue collection options, which could require limited disclosure of billing information (name, services provided, and balance due).
We strive to avoid this by working collaboratively whenever possible.
StorieBrook operates as a mission-driven business. While we are not legally structured as a nonprofit, we function similarly in spirit:
Clinicians are paid fairly for their work.
There are no excess profits distributed to owners or boards.
Remaining funds are reinvested into training, supervision, and expanded access.
Full-fee sessions support sliding scale access.
Sliding scale supports broader affordability.
The Low Cost Program extends care to those with the fewest resources.
